Psilocybin Therapy Centers — Where to Find Legal Treatment
Find legal psilocybin therapy centers in Oregon, Colorado, and abroad. Compare programs, understand costs, and get matched with a vetted provider.
Where can you find legal psilocybin therapy centers?
In Oregon and Colorado, where licensed service centers operate under state programs, and at retreat centers in Jamaica, the Netherlands, Costa Rica and elsewhere. Psilocybin remains Schedule I federally, so choose centers by screening, facilitator training and integration support rather than by legality alone.
Psilocybin Therapy Centers
Psilocybin-assisted therapy is now legally available in Oregon and Colorado — and at a growing number of retreat centers internationally. Here’s where to find a vetted program and what to expect.

Oregon
Oregon’s Measure 109 created the first state-regulated psilocybin service system. It covers psilocybin only — a 2026 bill to allow physician-supervised ibogaine in Oregon died in committee, as set out on our Portland ibogaine page. Licensed service centers offer psilocybin sessions facilitated by a trained, licensed facilitator. No medical diagnosis required — available to any adult.
Colorado
Proposition 122 created Colorado’s Natural Medicine Health Act. Psilocybin healing centers are licensed and operating in Denver and other cities. Also includes mescaline and DMT under the natural medicine umbrella.
Netherlands / Jamaica / Mexico
The Netherlands has a long tradition of legal psilocybin truffle retreats. Jamaica has no legal prohibition on psilocybin mushrooms. Mexico has legal gray areas allowing ceremonial use. All offer retreat programs for international visitors.
What Happens at a Psilocybin Therapy Center
Unlike ibogaine or ketamine, psilocybin therapy is less medically intensive — the focus is on psychological preparation, the session experience itself, and integration afterward. Most regulated programs follow a similar structure:
Preparation Session (1–3 sessions)
You meet with your facilitator to discuss your intentions, personal history, and what you hope to work through. Good preparation significantly increases the likelihood of a meaningful, productive experience. This phase typically takes 2–4 hours total.
The Psilocybin Session (4–6 hours)
You receive psilocybin in a supervised, comfortable setting. A trained facilitator is present throughout but does not guide the experience — their role is to hold space and ensure safety. You may wear eyeshades and listen to music to encourage inner focus. Doses are typically 25mg synthetic psilocybin or 3–5g dried mushrooms.
Integration (2–4+ sessions)
What you do with the experience after matters enormously. Integration sessions help you make meaning of what arose, translate insights into behavior, and sustain the benefits long-term. Many centers offer 2–4 integration sessions post-treatment, with additional support available.
What Psilocybin Therapy Treats
Clinical trials and real-world outcomes data support psilocybin therapy for a range of mental health conditions — particularly those involving rigid thought patterns, existential distress, or treatment-resistant symptoms.
Depression
In the head-to-head NEJM trial (Carhart-Harris et al., NEJM, 2021), 70% of the psilocybin group met response criteria and 57% met remission criteria at six weeks, against 48% and 28% on escitalopram — but these were secondary outcomes, and the trial’s primary outcome showed no statistically significant difference between the two.
Treatment-Resistant Depression
The COMPASS Pathways phase 2b trial (Goodwin et al., NEJM, 2022, n=233) tested a single 25 mg dose in people who had failed multiple prior treatments, reporting about 29% remission at three weeks. Response was not sustained at 12 weeks, and adverse events occurred in 77% of participants.
Anxiety
Particularly effective for existential anxiety in terminal illness. Johns Hopkins research showed 80% reduction in anxiety symptoms in patients with life-threatening cancer diagnoses.

PTSD & Trauma
Early research shows psilocybin helps process traumatic memories with less distress than conventional exposure therapy. Phase 2 trials underway at several sites.
Alcohol Use Disorder
A 2022 JAMA trial found psilocybin therapy reduced heavy drinking days by 50% vs. 26% for placebo. Participants reported lasting motivation change.
Smoking Cessation
Johns Hopkins reported 80% abstinence at 6-month follow-up in a psilocybin + CBT trial — the highest abstinence rate of any smoking cessation intervention ever studied.
How to Choose a Psilocybin Program
Facilitator Credentials
In Oregon and Colorado, facilitators must complete licensed training programs (200+ hours). Ask for their licensure number and training background. International retreats vary widely — ask about facilitator experience and training.
Session Setting
The setting has significant impact on the experience. Look for a comfortable, private space that feels safe. Outdoor ceremonies have cultural significance for many but add variables (weather, insects). Controlled indoor settings are more predictable.
Medical Screening
Psilocybin is generally safe, but contraindications exist: personal or family history of psychosis or schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder (in some cases), and certain medications (SSRIs may reduce effectiveness). A good program screens for these.
Integration Support
The value of psilocybin is largely in what you do with the experience afterward. Prioritize programs that offer meaningful integration — not just a session and a pamphlet. Ask specifically how many integration sessions are included and what format they take.
Transparency About What to Expect
A reputable program will give you a clear, detailed picture of what the experience might involve — including challenging moments. Programs that only promise “breakthrough” experiences without acknowledging difficulty are a red flag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is psilocybin therapy legal in my state?
As of 2026, psilocybin therapy is legal in Oregon and Colorado. A number of other states are advancing legislation. For most people outside these states, international options in Jamaica, the Netherlands, or Mexico are the accessible path.
How is psilocybin therapy different from a recreational mushroom experience?
Therapeutic psilocybin involves careful preparation, higher doses in a controlled setting with professional support, and structured integration afterward. The presence of a trained facilitator, intentional set and setting, and integration work produce meaningfully different outcomes than recreational use.
Do I need a prescription for psilocybin therapy?
In Oregon and Colorado regulated programs, no prescription is required — psilocybin is provided through a licensed service center, not a pharmacy. For international retreats, no prescription is needed. FDA-approved psilocybin (if approved) would require a prescription.
What’s the difference between psilocybin and ibogaine?
Both are psychedelic medicines with documented therapeutic effects, but they work very differently. Psilocybin (4–6 hour experience) is excellent for depression, anxiety, existential distress, and addiction. Ibogaine (30–36 hour experience) is uniquely effective for opioid detox, resetting addiction circuitry, and treating PTSD/TBI. Many patients benefit from both over time.
How much does psilocybin therapy cost?
Minnesota is weighing a similar psilocybin programme, though its task force excludes ibogaine by statute (see ibogaine in Minneapolis). Oregon and Colorado licensed sessions typically cost $1,000–$4,000 depending on provider and package. This usually includes preparation, session, and some integration. International retreats range from $2,500–$8,000 for multi-day programs with meals and lodging included.
