The situation in Colorado
Colorado recorded 1,640 drug overdose deaths in 2024, down 15% from 1,926 in 2023 — an improvement, but a slower one than the 24% fall nationally.Source: CDC National Center for Health Statistics, Provisional Drug Overdose Death Counts, 12 months ending December 2024.
Decriminalised is not the same as available. Ibogaine stays federally Schedule I, and until a pilot site or healing center is approved, Coloradans who choose ibogaine still travel to licensed clinics in Mexico, usually from Denver (DEN).

What Colorado law says about ibogaine
Colorado is the most permissive state for ibogaine. Proposition 122 (2022) decriminalised personal use for adults 21 and over, and HB26-1325 (signed 4 June 2026) creates an ibogaine research pilot that only starts once $150,000 in donations arrives. No licensed healing center is confirmed to offer ibogaine.
- Decriminalised for adults. Proposition 122, the Natural Medicine Health Act (2022), decriminalised personal use of psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, ibogaine and mescaline for adults 21+, and let the state add ibogaine to licensed facilities from 2026.
- A pilot, if it is funded. HB26-1325 (signed 4 June 2026, effective 12 August) creates an Ibogaine Research Pilot Program of up to five sites. It carries no state money: it starts only if $150,000 in gifts or grants arrives before 1 January 2028, and sites also need federal approval.
- Safety rules written in. The same law directs the state to adopt ibogaine safety rules covering medical prescreening (which may include an ECG), continuous monitoring and aftercare, and requires a benefit-sharing plan with Indigenous communities traditionally connected to iboga.
